Water heater descaling and flushing removes mineral scale buildup from inside a water heater, particularly critical for tankless units where scale accumulates on the heat exchanger and directly affects both performance and lifespan. Hard water areas see this issue much faster than soft water areas, and most tankless manufacturers actually require regular descaling to keep the warranty valid, which makes this maintenance rather than an optional extra.
You need this if it's been a year or more since your tankless unit's last descaling, if you're noticing declining hot water flow or temperature consistency that wasn't there when the unit was new, if you're in a known hard water area and haven't had regular maintenance done, or if your unit manufacturer specifies annual descaling as part of warranty compliance and you want to stay covered. Reduced performance that develops gradually over months, rather than a sudden failure, is a classic sign scale buildup is the culprit.
We start by isolating the unit using the service valves most tankless systems have built in specifically for this purpose, then circulate a descaling solution through the heat exchanger to dissolve mineral buildup that's accumulated on the internal components. This isn't the same as a quick rinse – proper descaling requires circulating solution for a sustained period to actually break down scale rather than just flushing loose debris. Once descaling is complete, we flush the system with clean water to clear the descaling solution fully, then test performance to confirm flow rate and temperature consistency have improved.
Cost is generally modest for a straightforward descaling visit, though units that have gone years without service sometimes need a longer, more thorough treatment, and we'll let you know if we find things worse than a routine descaling would suggest. Homes in Mckinleyville, CA with known hard water benefit from putting this on a regular annual schedule rather than waiting for performance to decline first.
